List Building: Why You Don’t Need 1000s of Subscribers
List envy. We’ve all had it.
Your competitor who attracted 1000 subscribers in her first week. The big shot with an email list of over 100,000.
You want to be like them.
I used to think that way too. Until I realized something. When it comes to list building numbers aren’t the most important thing.
It costs money and time to manage a large list. Why have 100,000 subscribers if only a small percentage read your emails?
There’s a better way to build your list.
What You Need Instead
I ignore a lot of emails sent to my personal account. Like the ones from a local car dealership I can’t unsubscribe from. It drives me crazy!
However, I open every email from Moxie Jean.
You probably don’t know Moxie Jean. They’re an online consignment store for kids. I love shopping for my daughter and I love bargains. Yet I hate shopping malls.
Moxie Jean regularly offers me a solution to my problem. Which I’m grateful for. I’m their ideal customer.
You see. It’s all about attracting the right subscribers.
List Building the Right Way
This may sound obvious. Find your ideal customers and get them onto your email list.
But putting this into practice is tough. Over the years I’ve tried various tactics to attract more (ideal) subscribers. Some have worked. Others have failed miserably.
There’s one strategy that has worked time and again. It comes down to two steps:
STEP 1: Identify your ideal customer and their biggest problem
For example, imagine you’re a fitness trainer. Your ideal customer might be new Moms who want to get rid of their post pregnancy weight.
I wrote more about identifying your ideal customer and what they want here.
STEP 2: Hang out where she is and offer a solution for free
In the fitness trainer example, you could reach out to local Mom groups and offer a free group class. (You would need to require email registration first).
This strategy has a couple of key nuances:
- The solution must give your ideal customer immediate results. It can be in any format: downloadable cheat sheet, how-to-video, free webinar, group session, etc.
- The solution must be accessed behind an email opt-in form.
How I Applied The 2-Step List Building Process
I’ll walk through an example to show how this works. Here’s how I started building my list at sallyannmiller.com.
STEP 1: Identify your ideal customer and their biggest problem
My ideal customer is a solo business owner. She has a website and writes blog posts. She’s frustrated because her efforts aren’t translating into revenue. She wants more email subscribers and more customers.
STEP 2: Hang out where she is and offer a solution for free
I was already active in several online groups. I offered to do FREE Website reviews. Below is my exact post.
NOTE: Please don’t copy this post word for word. I’ve added comments in [brackets] so you can use this as a template.
Hey everyone – Happy Friday! Do you want to get more website visitors to sign up for your email list?
[The problem I can help with.]
I’ve decided to do something special. And offer FREE website reviews.
[Here’s the free solution.]
I’ve had success using email marketing in my first biz. In about 6 months, I grew my list to 1000 subscribers (over half of whom are now customers). I want to share what works with others.
[Establish credibility.]
Here’s how the review works:
1. You sign up here.
2. I review your website.
3. I send you 2-3 actionable steps to get more subscribers and customers.
I test all my methods first. So you know they work AND fit into a busy schedule.
Why am I doing this? As well as helping you, I gain insights into the challenges you face. This will help me develop the best paid programs in the future.
[Be open about what you’re doing.]
For now, I’m limiting to the FIRST 10 ONLY. As I want to provide quality information and that takes time!
[Establish scarcity so people sign up quickly.]
Why This Worked
Let’s dig a little deeper. There’re some important details in my offer:
- I helped solve a deep pain – how to convert traffic into subscribers.
- It was easy to take me up on the offer. All people had to do was provide a name, email address, and website url.
- I made my offer in a public group. As people thanked me for my help, others were encouraged to sign up.
- I over delivered by giving personalized website reviews. Each report was 3-4 pages long with detailed action steps.
Of course doing personalized reviews doesn’t scale. After 25 reviews, I stopped offering this service. I now give my subscribers a Website Conversion Cheat Sheet. I follow this up with ongoing training on email marketing.
If you’re interested, you can download my cheat sheet here. It’s the same sheet I used to do the personalized reviews.
This strategy not only got my email list started. It also helped me understand my ideal customer. Especially the challenges she faces. It gave me ideas on posts to write, products to build, etc. In the words of John Russell (President of Harley Davidson):…
How To Grow Your Audience Without Guest Posting
Growing your audience takes time.
Especially if you’re just starting out.
But there’s one list building tactic that takes very little time.
Imagine if you could gain 68 new Facebook fans and 23 email sign ups.
With just 15 minutes work.
Sound good? This happened for my consignment business just last week.
It all started when a fellow business owner reached out to me and proposed a partnership.
She asked if I wanted to take part in a Facebook contest. All I had to do was provide a prize. She would promote the contest and run it on her Facebook page.
I’d successfully worked with this business owner before. So I didn’t hesitate.
It took me less than a minute to say yes. A further 5 minutes to share her contest on my Facebook page. Then maybe 5 more minutes to post after the contest closed.
That’s less than 15 minutes work.
End result – 68 new Facebook fans and 23 new email subscribers.
Contest: New Facebook Followers
How You Can Form A Business Partnership
By now you’re probably wondering how can you grow your audience with a business partnership.
You could wait for someone to approach you. But this is risky.
You may be waiting a long time. And not all partnerships are worth your time.
One of my mantras is quality over quantity . You want to focus your efforts on attracting your ideal audience.
So I prefer to take matters into my own hands. Here’s my 4-step process to building a profitable business partnership.
This process assumes you want to do a giveaway or contest. But it can easily be adapted for other types of partnership.
Step #1: Select Potential Business Partner
First you want to seek out a potential partner. This step is essential. You want to work with someone who:
- Has a similar ideal audience to you.
- Is not a direct competitor.
- Has a highly engaged audience (check their blog comments, Facebook engagement, etc.)
Select someone you already have a relationship with. Maybe you’re part of the same online community. Or you regularly share each other’s content. Or maybe you met in person at a conference or event.
In the example of my local kids sale, I partnered with someone who ran a popular blog that reviews local playgrounds. We both had sites that appealed to local Moms with young children.
Step #2: Decide What To Give Away
Next decide on what you want to give away.
Your giveaway must be valuable and appeal to your ideal audience.
For maximum impact select something special. Some ideas are a copy of your latest book, a free coaching session or a gift certificate.
For my consignment sale I gave away 2 Pre-Sale Passes. These are highly valued by local Moms who want to shop the sale early.
Step #3: Email Potential Business Partner
I was lucky. I didn’t need to reach out to my business partner. But if you’re initiating the partnership, go ahead and email them.
Clearly state what they gain from the partnership. This includes:
- A free gift for their audience.
- High engagement on their blog or social media site.
- New website visitors and/ or social media followers. (Since you will also be promoting the giveaway).
Outline your proposal and say you’re open to other ideas. Here’s an email outline you can use:
“Hi [name],
I enjoyed meeting you at [ABC]. I loved your latest post on [topic] for [genuine reason] .
I’d like to help you and your community out. And thought you’d be interested in giving away [thing] on your blog. I know your community will love it. The giveaway would drive a ton of engagement and new followers to your site. I’d be heavily promoting it to my followers via email and social media.
I think it will be a lot of fun! I’m also open to any other partnership ideas.
Let me know if you might be interested and I’ll send over a more detailed proposal.”
Notice how this email is brief. It only asks if they might be interested. This makes it easy for your potential partner to say yes. You can send over a more detailed proposal after they show interest in your idea.
Step #4: Hold Giveaway and Grow Your Audience
Lastly hold your giveaway. And don’t forget to collect email sign ups. There’re a few ways you can do this.
One option is to make email sign up a condition for entry to the giveaway. However, I prefer not to do this.
Instead, I reached out to entrants after the contest. I invited them to subscribe to my email list (with a suitable incentive to do so).
23 out of 68 new Facebook fans went ahead and subscribed.
Contest: New Email Subscribers
Why Business Partnerships Work
Business partnerships work because they put you in front of a new, qualified audience. They showcase your business to your ideal customers. Giving you the chance to increase traffic and grow your audience.
Holding a giveaway or contest is not the only type of partnership.
You could hold a joint webinar or training session. Like this one hosted by Amy Porterfield and Melanie Duncan.
Guest posting is another form of partnership. Although it typically take more effort. I’d be surprised to see someone write a quality post in 15 minutes!…
Why Your Email Open Rate Is Low And What You Can Do About It
Remember when you were a kid. And you spent hours building the perfect sand castle.
It had a moat. Towers on each corner. Windows. Doors.
Then some other kid came along and kicked it down.
All that hard work gone. Devastating.
It feels a bit like that when subscribers don’t open your emails.
You spend hours crafting the perfect content. You’re sure your material is good.
And then someone doesn’t open it. That’s frustrating.
Luckily things can be different. Let’s look at 5 reasons why your email open rate is low and what you can do about it.
#1 You Have The Wrong Subscribers
This one’s a biggy.
If you have the wrong people on your list. Then they’re not going to open your emails.
Imagine you’re a life coach for top level professionals. Clearly you don’t want to attract stay-at-home Moms onto your list.
This usually happens when you give something away that’s not targeted at your ideal customers.
In the above example, “Tips To Balance Home and Work” will attract more than your ideal audience. Whereas “How To Negotiate a $10,000 Salary Increase” will appeal to a more targeted market.
The solution is to get crystal clear on your target market. Then work to attract them and only them. Make sure your website copy, your opt-in offer, your posts all appeal to your ideal customer.
#2 Your Subject Lines Suck
Have you ever deleted an email because it doesn’t look interesting?
I know I have – especially when the email comes from a business.
If your headlines suck then so will your email open rate.
Here’re some tips to writing good email headlines:
- Keep them short. Many people read email on their mobile device. So will only see the first 50 characters of your email subject line.
- Invoke curiosity. Hint at the solution to a problem, new research or some other discovery.
- Avoid over-using symbols and capital letters. These look spammy and they can also trigger the dreaded spam filters.
- Use a conversational tone. Avoid corporate speak.
- Don’t include someone’s name in the subject line (it looks forced) but do use “you” or “your”.
- Create an email swipe file. Which emails do you open? Keep a swipe file of subject lines you like and try something similar yourself.
#3 Your Content Sucks
It’s no good writing a great headline and then not following through in your content.
If people have opened your past emails and been disappointed. They’ll eventually stop opening your emails.
Writing a great email is just like writing a great blog post.
Good content teaches, solves a problem, is entertaining, or causes an emotional response. Aim to do at least 2 of these things in all of your emails.
#4 Spam Filters
Email spam filters are ruthless. Their goal is to protect users from unsolicited email.
But your email isn’t spam (I hope).
So here’re some things you can do to avoid the spam filters:
- When someone first joins your list ask them to “white-list” your email address. They can do this by adding you to their contacts.
- Avoid certain words in your email: free, mortgage, insurance, act now, casino, limited time, coupons, click now, and open immediately.
- Avoid using lots of exclamation marks and ALL CAPS. Especially in the subject line.
- Don’t include too many images (I prefer to send text emails).
#5 From Address
I still get emails from donotreply@business.com.
Personally I find this off-putting. And according to this article I’m not the only one. 43% of email recipients click the Spam button based on the email “from” name or email address.
Luckily the fix is easy. Make sure the from address on your emails is a real person. I’d also avoid info@business.com.…
